Petition Against U.S. 31 J-Turn

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plans to install J-turns at the following intersections:

  • U.S. 31 and State Road 10

  • U.S. 31 and 17th Road (Dewey Street)

  • U.S. 31 and State Road 110

With the proposed J-turns, in order to cross U.S. 31 on State Road 10, or turn left onto U.S. 31, traffic will turn right, travel to the J-turn, turn around and head back to State Road 10 to turn right or continue straight. The hope is to cut down on accidents. However, we believe this will have a negative economic impact on the communities of Argos and Culver, as well as create safety concerns.

Concerns

With the amount of traffic traveling on U.S. 31 at high rates of speed, there is a concern that this arrangement will make it more difficult for buses and semi traffic to cross lanes of traffic to make the turns, not to mention the farming equipment used in that area. A map below shows the changes. Larger maps are available at the Argos Town Building, 201 W. Walnut St., Argos, IN 46501
